What is a Fetal Blood Transfusion

A fetal blood transfusion is a medical procedure where blood is given to a fetus to treat conditions that can affect its health while still in the womb. This treatment is similar to a blood transfusion that adults may receive, but it is done very carefully to protect both the mother and the baby. One such specialized procedure is an intrauterine fetal blood transfusion, where the transfusion occurs directly within the womb. This procedure is usually performed during the second or third trimester of pregnancy and is a vital technique to ensure the baby’s health before birth. At Garbh, we offer the best intrauterine fetal blood transfusion in Chandigarh, which is done by top-tier medical expertise and advanced diagnostic technology. Our facility is designed to provide the utmost care and precision, ensuring the well-being of both mother and child.

Types of Fetal Blood Transfusions

There are mainly two types of fetal blood transfusions:

Intravascular Transfusion (IVT)

This is the most common type and involves directly transfusing blood into the fetus's blood vessel, usually the umbilical cord.

Intraperitoneal Transfusion (IPT)

What To Expect

After the intrauterine fetal blood transfusion, the mother will need a little time, about 1 to 3 hours, to rest and recover. If the fetus was given medication to keep it still, it might take a few hours before the mother starts feeling the fetus move again.

Indications for Fetal Blood Transfusion

Fetal blood transfusion, including intrauterine fetal blood transfusion, is typically recommended in situations where the fetus is at risk of severe anemia, a condition where there is a low count of red blood cells. This can be caused by:

  • Rh disease: A blood condition where the mother’s immune system attacks the fetus’s red blood cells.
  • Infections:Some infections in utero can lead to fetal anemia.
  • Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome: A condition that occurs only in identical twins sharing a placenta.

Doctors use ultrasound and other diagnostic tests to determine if a fetus needs this treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, with advancements in medical technology, fetal blood transfusions are generally safe, but, like all medical procedures, they do carry some risks. Your healthcare provider will discuss these with you in detail.

The fetus's health is continuously monitored via ultrasound during the procedure to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Typically, the mother will undergo several health checks. Each case may vary, so specific preparations can be discussed with your healthcare provider.
