What is NIPT?
NIPT is a genetic screening tool. NIPT blood test can be performed starting from the 10th week of pregnancy. This test screens the genetic material collected from mother’s blood. Tiny pieces of DNA from the placenta (known as cell-free fetal DNA, or cffDNA) enter the mother’s blood, during pregnancy and provide genetic information about the fetus. Hence, it can be used for further testing. Unlike other invasive tests like amniocentesis, the NIPT blood test only needs a simple blood sample from the mother. This makes it a safer and easier choice.
NIPT tests done at Garbh, utilise advanced sequencing technology to check for chromosomal issues like:
1. Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21)- An extra chromosome 21.
- Children with Down syndrome may have cognitive development challenges as a result of extra chromosome.
- However, these children can lead joyful and fulfilling lives with proper support.
- Early detection can help families access therapies, educational tools, and community assistance.
2. Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18)- An extra chromosome 18.
- This condition is related to certain developmental challenges.
- Early diagnosis can help families to work with specialists to create future care plans.
3. Patau Syndrome (Trisomy 13)- An extra chromosome 13.
- It generally comes with heart defects and other physical complications.
- Early awareness about the disease can help the parents to provide a nurturing environment that caters to their baby’s needs.
4. Sex Chromosome Variations
- Examples: Turner syndrome (only one X chromosome) and Klinefelter syndrome (XXY).
- These variations can affect puberty, fertility, or learning.
- If detected early, many interventions such as hormone therapy or educational support can be beneficial.

The Increasing Importance of NIPT
1. Knowledge About Prenatal Health:
Today’s parents are more aware and want to take charge of their baby’s health, early. Well-informed families are focusing on screenings to be ready for anything that might come up.
2. Later Parenthood:
As many couples are deciding to have kids later in life, the need for tests like NIPT is increasing. The NIPT test cost in Chandigarh is a small price to pay for parents looking for peace of mind during high-risk pregnancies.
3. Worry to Empowerment:
The days when prenatal testing caused stress are now over. NIPT test report can give parents some valuable information. This makes them enjoy their pregnancy while staying informed.
4. Access to Technology:
Tests like the NIPT blood test, which were once only available in big cities, can now be found in Chandigarh, at Garbh.
5. Comprehensive Family Planning:
Finding out early can help families to connect with pediatric specialists, support groups, and financial planning tools. This builds confidence and readiness.
At Garbh, we’re excited about this move towards informed and empowered parenting. We aim to provide you with understanding, kindness, and options, not fear.
Who Should Think About NIPT?
- Older Moms: Women over 35 have a higher chance of having a baby with Down syndrome, and this risk can increase to 1 in 100 by age 40.
- Unusual Ultrasound Results: Signs like thicker nuchal translucency, missing nasal bones, or heart issues.
- Family Background of Genetic Problems: Parents who have had kids with chromosomal issues.
- High-Risk Pregnancies: This includes pregnancies from IVF, gestational diabetes, or autoimmune diseases.
- Parents Wanting Early Comfort: For those who feel nervous about invasive tests or just want some early reassurance.
At Garbh, we will offer personalised risk evaluations during pre-test counselling to see if the NIPT blood test is right for you.
When Should You Consider NIPT?
NIPT test in Chandigarh can be performed as early as 10 weeks into your pregnancy. It is when there’s enough fetal DNA in the mother’s blood. The best time to test is between 10 and 13 weeks for two main reasons:
- Early Action: This gives you time to do follow-up tests (such as CVS and Amniocentesis) if necessary.
- Emotional Readiness: It helps parents feel more prepared to make informed choices about their pregnancy.
NIPT can still be a good option right up until delivery. So, it can work well for those in their second or third trimester.

Why Pick NIPT Instead of Traditional Tests?
1. Accuracy
- 99% detection rate for Trisomy 21, 18, and 13.
- 95% accuracy for issues with sex chromosomes.
2. Peace of Mind
The NIPT test might cost more than other prenatal tests. Garbh offers it at an affordable price range, making it accessible for many families. It’s a small cost to avoid the stress and expense of invasive tests.3. Quick Results
You’ll get your NIPT test report in 7–10 days. It is faster than traditional karyotyping which usually takes 2–3 weeks.4. No Physical Stress
Unlike amniocentesis, which requires you to rest, you can go back to your normal activities right after the NIPT blood test.
How Does NIPT Work?
Step 1: Pre-Test Counselling
- Our Counsellor will explain:
- How fetal DNA gets into the mother’s blood.
- The difference between screening and diagnostic tests
- The NIPT testing cost and options.
Step 2: Blood Draw
We take a small 10 ml blood sample from the arm. It’s quick and less painful than invasive procedures like CVS and amniocentesis.
Step 3: Lab Analysis
The blood sample goes to a special lab for testing and analysis.
Step 4: Report Delivery
- Your NIPT test report will show results as either “low risk” or “high risk” for the conditions we check.
- The Fetal medicine consultant will go over your results with you in a caring and supportive way.
How Accurate is NIPT?
- Fetal Fraction:If there is low fetal DNA (<4%) because of early pregnancy or if the mother is overweight, she might need to take the test again.
- Placental Mosaicism: This is a rare situation where the DNA from the placenta is different from the baby’s DNA.

Limitations to Remember
- NIPT is a screening test, not a diagnostic test. If you get a “high-risk” result, your doctor might advise amniocentesis or CVS to confirm the risk.
- Fetal fraction is important. If there isn’t enough fetal DNA in your blood (less than 4%), the doctor can advise you to repeat the test.
- Focus on chromosomes. NIPT doesn’t check for neural tube defects (like spina bifida) or all genetic disorders.
